Documents:
Check whether your passport is still valid, at least up to the date of your return. Many countries (particularly in Asia) require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months. Talk to your travel agency about this. Travellers are not admitted to the country and are turned back.
Check whether a visa is required for your travel destination and where you can get this. Talk to your travel agency about this.

Vaccinations:
Check whether you need vaccinations for your trip. If so, make an appointment, preferably well in advance, with a vaccination centre (travel clinic) or your general practitioner.
Find out whether malaria is present in the country. De GP can prescribe malaria tablets for you. Check f.i. this site.

Travel pharmacy:
SPutting your travel pharmacy together. Make sure that you don’t pack your first aid kit in your hand luggage. In view of the stricter security controls at airports, it may happen that your kit is removed because it contains sharp metal objects like scissors, needles or tweezers.

Insurance:
A good insurance is important, check this site for a travel insurance.
